젊음 -사무엘 얼만

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,
a vigor of the emotions. . . .
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,
of the appetite of adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals. . .
In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;
so long as it receive messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage
and power from men and from the infinite, solong are you young. . .

젊음은 인생의 한 시기가 아니요, 마음의 상태이다.
장밋빛 볼과 붉은 입술, 유연한 무릎이 아니라
의지와 풍부한 상상력과 활기찬 감정에 달려 있다.
젊음이란 기질이 소심하기 보다는 용기에 넘치고,
수월함을 좋아하기 보다는 모험을 쫒는 것이고
이는 스무살 청년에게도, 예순 노인에게도 있다.
단지 나이를 먹는다고 늙는 것은 아니다.
이상理想을 버릴때 우리는 늙는다.
그대와 나의 가슴 한가운데에는 무선국이 있다.
그것이 사람들로부터 또는 하늘로부터 아름다움과 희망과 활기,
용기와 힘의 멧세지를 수신하는 한, 그대는 영원히 젊으리라.

세상이 온통 푸르름으로 싱그러운 계절이다. 마치 젊음을 뽑내듯이. . . 미국의 시인이요 작가인 Samuel Ullman(1840-1924) 의 시 '젊음'(Youth) 을 되새겨 본다. 독일에서 태어나 미국으로 이주한 그는 교육과 사회사업에 종사하면서 글들을 썻다. 이 시가 80세 생일을 기념해 출판한 시집에 실린 것이라 하니 그는 분명 '나이를 잊고 늘 푸르게 살았으리라' 짐작된다.
